If you’ve ever received a nasty look while reaching for a wine glass, it’s probably because you’re reaching for the wrong one. I have a vivid memory of this happening to me. I was at a dinner party a few summers ago, and a friend had just opened a bottle of red that he’d been saving for a special occasion. I went into his cabinet to fetch a couple of glasses and brought them to the table.

Fortunately, this friend, while a wine aficionado, was not pretentious enough to call me out for grabbing white glasses. But I could see it in his eyes. I hastily went back to the cabinet to get “red” glasses. I would later discover I had grabbed the wrong red glasses. Nevertheless, a bottle of Caymus was subsequently consumed somewhat properly.
